After a highly successful 2016, the Coyote Ugly team looks ahead to an epic 2017, with new international franchise agreements and new bars opening all over the world! Owner and founder Liliana Lovell and Justin Livingston, VP of Global Development had time to catch up in Cardiff, Wales, during their third opening in three months overseas, and first in the UK. “It’s thrilling to be at these international bar openings,” says Lovell. “It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come from a small (but awesome), single bar in New York City.” The famous bar is expanding to all parts of the globe, with its most recent openings in Bishkek-Kyrgyzstan, Tokyo-Japan, and Cardiff. Momentum has continued to build in recent months and there is no signs of the rapid growth slowing down.
Global Franchise magazine asked Justin Livingston what it’s like to open bars in such diverse markets and how they adapt to different cultures? Coyote Ugly has bars open in seven countries to date, and the Global team was able to learn a little about what went into each of the last three openings.
Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – A developing county, Kyrgyzstan gained its independence after the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991 and Coyote Ugly was only the 7th U.S. brand to enter the market. “We found a great franchisee in Bishkek who owns other bars, restaurants, and karaoke bars. He had good experience and wanted to bring a very American-style concept into the market to create something different and unique,” says Livingston. After the rigorous Coyote Ugly training and opening program, the bar is now a stand-out in the Kyrgyz culture and is having lots of success!
Tokyo, Japan – Coyote Ugly had an amazing time opening their first bar in the land of the rising sun. Opening in the Roppongi area of Tokyo which is known for its food and entertainment, Coyote Ugly appeals to a culture that is no stranger to American concepts. “There were a few things about Japanese culture we had to adjust to, mainly around staff communication and roles,” owner, Liliana Lovell says, “but the girls learned the dances faster than any other bar we’ve ever trained! They have a talented staff of dancers, singers, drummers and DJs and of course, they are all amazing bartenders with huge personalities! The Japan bar was a great showing of some serious girl power behind the bar.”
Cardiff, Wales – The most recent opening of 2016 was in historic Cardiff, Wales. The first Coyote Ugly in the UK, the bar is in The Square, an historic building in the heart of the city that originally functioned as the Philharmonic Theater. With a major renovation, the bar was transformed and the Coyote Ugly parties began with a ticketed Grand Opening event where all proceeds were donated to support breast cancer research. “Coyote Ugly was very well received and the epic venue has continued to fill every night since opening, with locals and tourists alike coming to experience the Coyote Culture! It’s a great entry to the UK market!” Livingston says.
This recent surge in the brand’s expansion is just the beginning, as Coyote Ugly is in development conversations with potential franchisees in China, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Germany, Canada, Mexico and more. “With major cities like London, Sydney, Shanghai, Bangkok, Montreal, Cancun, Rio, and many more, there are amazing opportunities for Coyote Ugly all around the world,” Livingston says.
The concept is seeking amazing partners to add to the franchise family who have the experience and desire to enter or expand into the bar/nightclub industry at the top with a powerhouse brand like Coyote Ugly. The Saloons thrive in major cities with high tourism and high numbers of local patrons.
Led by owner, founder, and original Coyote Liliana Lovell, Coyote Ugly is a well-oiled machine with one of the strongest support and training systems in franchising. This unique concept is able to provide systems and methods for running the world-famous brand but also the flexibility to adapt to local cultures and traditions. The robust training and operations system includes full training of owners, managers, and staff, assistance with site selection and procurement, store design, brand and marketing guidance, and unrivaled ongoing support.
The total investment in a Coyote Ugly Saloon franchise is between $500,000USD and $1,500,000USD dependent on location/market, size, and condition of the unit. Single and multi-unit franchise partnerships are available. Coyote Ugly is looking to expand the brand with franchisees who embrace the culture of Coyote Ugly Saloon and share their vision of offering the Coyote Experience to the market. Owners will benefit from the history of a world-wide legend in the industry and tested business model.
