Erik and Marta Hughes have renewed their ownership with the franchise and will continue to run Junk King Columbus.
In 2010, Erik and Marta Hughes became Junk King’s first franchise partners. Now, the junk removal and hauling company has announced the Hughes will be renewing their ownership of Junk King Columbus.
“We can’t believe it has already been 10 years since we’ve opened our Junk King Columbus location. It has been exciting for us to see how quickly the brand has grown since 2010,” said Erik Hughes, co-owner of Junk King Columbus. “The clutter we have been able to remove from our customers’ lives while helping to minimize the amount of waste in Columbus’ landfills has been rewarding for Marta, my hauling crew and I. Thank you to the Junk King family for trusting us to be its first franchisees all those years ago.”
What drew Erik and Marta to take a chance on Junk King was their eagerness to have a business they could call their own. As parents of two sons, sustainability was also important to them. When they learned about Junk King’s green philosophy of recycling or donating at least 60 per cent of the items it picks up, Erik and Marta knew this was the opportunity they were looking for.

They put a lot of trust in my team and I as we were launching our franchise, and we gave them that trust right back. Junk King is a white collar business management franchise in a blue collar industry with company operations showing more than 10 years of sustainable growth. It launched its franchise in October 2009 and has awarded more than 110 new franchises, representing nearly 400 units including a master license for Central America, and two master licenses in Canada.
Junk King’s model is adaptable as an owner-operator model (not working on truck), transitional model from another career, or straight ROI model with a general manager in place running the day-to-day. The company also expands into the mini-bin sector, offering additional services to small market territories.
