Stumpy’s Hatchet House has made a franchising success from the traditional country pastime of hurling hatchets. Since opening the first outlet in Eatontown, New Jersey, (which turned over $1m in its first 16 months and now employs 16 people), Stumpy’s has sold nearly two dozen franchises, suggesting that experience-based businesses may do well at a time when store retail is being undermined by online selling.
Co-owner Trish Oliphant said, “I always say to people, when was the last time you did something for the first time? And that’s what Stumpy’s is. I think this is America’s next bowling.”
The woods cabin-themed centers feature10 throwing pits, where users throw hatchets at a wooden target. Soft drinks and snacks are available from the bar.
